The original stories leaked through to much for it to be great if you don't know then it's well done.
Five of the six stories in this collection are re-purposed Conan Doyle stories that didn't originally feature Sherlock Holmes or Watson. The author has jiggered them to be Holmes and Watson stories with the spotlight on Watson. It's a pretty good idea and it mostly pays off.
This set of six short stories should be a draw for any ACD fan as the first five have been rewritten from Conan Doyle stories which did not feature Holmes or referenced him only tangentially. Ryan has rewritten and renamed them to focus on Watson as a central character. I found The Beetle to be very consistent with Conan Doyle's voice, but the ending, which may have worked in his day seems to be an oversimplification in ours. The second story is based on Holmes missing a clue that he would never, in a million years, have missed.The remaining stories are stronger and the last one, an original by Ryan, is a must- read for fans of the series.
Robert Ryan has a very good grasp of Watson's character. His Dr. Watson novels are wonderful and these six re-workings of Doyle originals or original stories in the style of Doyle are great. Nice little bits of fun and adventure to hold us over until the next Dr. Watson novel debuting early in 2016. I loved all of them, though the sixth, featuring the real life T.E. Lawrence and some sneaky cats, was my favorite. Definitely recommended reading for fans of Holmes and Watson. Required reading for those of us who relate most to the good doctor!
